Scene Analysis

The Women's Insitute
  • Setting- a local food and games faie somewhere in Britain
  • Characters- two, elderly, white women judging jam. Both with RP accents.
  • Costumes- stereotypical elderly women's clothing with cardigans, long skirts, purses and glasses.
  • Music- classical

The scene with these women shows them judging jam and not realising who made it, one tastes it and then they find out who made it. Being very offensive to a number of groups, the characters manage to insult lesbians, black people and Asian people. The character complements the jam first then finds out who made it and throw-up numerous times.

Socially this sketch gives Britain an overview of how some people see ethnicity and diversity in this nation, but shows how rediculous it is to have such beliefs about certain people as we see from these characters. In a way it challenges some beliefs some racist people have but also reinforces the stereotype about some possible racist groups.

"Please Judy, no more lesbian jam. I can't keep it down".

Considering they refered to black people, on a personal note I wasn't actually offended, but found it funny because of the context in which it was made. Also by being so obvious about it with other groups as well you really feel you can just laugh at it as they don't target one group but every possible group you can think of, and that's considering the whole show.

Course Evaluation

  • I think our course has been organised very well with the best of intensions for the students and I'd like to thank Mr.Bush and Ms.Stevens for that.
  • The content covered in the course is one of the reasons I cared on taking it and I find it to a certain extent, fun to do.
  • Most of the handouts are useful e.g. the booklets, but the handouts like from films etc aren't goning to be used again as is a waste of trees.
  • The pace of the lessons I think were better paced last year in truth. It's not bad now, but I think the context of the coursework that we're doing slows it down because we're concentrating on material that isn't relavant to us independently.
  • The standard is very high with the teaching, I learn more in Media than any other subject (But sir, don't get big headed)!
  • My expectations have been exceeded as I came into the course with a B grade at GCSE level and come out with an A at AS level.
  • The exrta curricular events have had a major impact. The awards evening last year set the standard of what we had to meet for our own practical productions, without it I don't think I'd have done as well as I did.
  • Macguffin is another way of making sure we get the homework regardless of whether we're in the lesson or not, so NO it hasn't been helpful lol!
  1. When thinking of hand outs, think about whether they'd really be relavan to all of us, if not, why hurt the trees!
  2. When setting homework, have mercy on us, we have coursework already and media isn' the only subject we take.
  3. More cinema trips, it really does help ( not just a reason to get a day off)!

Self Evaluation

So far, the course has had its ups and downs for me and considering my own evaluation on how I've done so far i think I've always tried to put in the effort and produced the best work in this subject than any other.

Attainment 2: i think I know what I'm talking about for the majority of the time and I've feel comfortable that I've absorbed the knowledge I have.

Effort 2: I feel that I've put in the effort throughout the course but sometimes I find myself abit lazy in getting things done.

Punctuality 1: I always make sure I'm in class on time, I've never been on report for it and never been kicked out for being late.

Submission and quality of homework 2: I think it's good, but I think I could do better and get it in on time in future.

Ability to work independently 1: I feel as an individual very comfortable working by myself and feel I produce some of my best work if I do, do it on my own.

Quality of writing 3: It's ok, but I think if I could express my self on the page as I can with spoken contributions it would be a lot better.

Organisation of media folder 3: I find it hard to stay organised sometimes, I have to be told or else it just gets worse, but now I know, I'll try and sort it.

Oral contributions in class 1: I know how to express myself and want people to hear what I've got to say because I think my points that I make are useful.

Targets:
  1. To put in maximum effort as it's my most impotant year.
  2. Read more of any media to try and improve writing style.
  3. Organise and keep organised folder.
